Susan Allen

Born a fifth generation Houstonian, I was later raised on Mount Desert Island, Maine; a coastal upbringing that has greatly shaped who I have become. Summers sailing the coast of Maine led to a collegiate interest in marine biology (I have a B.S. in Biology from the University of Connecticut), and a wonderful twist of fate led me to a career as the first mate and chef on a private sailing yacht. This experience not only introduced me to my husband, but also led me to a great number of incredible opportunities and precious memories, among them living on the Istrian peninsula of Croatia, winters spent cruising the West Indies, and sailing across the Atlantic Ocean with stops in the Canary and Cape Verde Island chains.

Business opportunities eventually lured us back to our favorite of coastlines to settle down, and we moved from ship to shore in Southwest Harbor, a community that we are honored to be a part of, and one that we are grateful to be raising our two teenage daughters. Mount Desert Island gives us so many amazing opportunities for outdoor activities, and in our free time our family is often hiking, swimming, exploring new coves in our runabout and exploring the solitude of the park and surrounding areas. I also love to garden, cook and am an avid tennis and platform tennis player. Our winter seasons take our family to our small sailboat in the Bahamas, where we sail for two months each year in decidedly warmer waters.

I am the Chair of the Mount Desert Island High School Board, a member of the Pemetic Elementary School and AOS 91 district school boards, and I’ve been grateful for the opportunity to serve on behalf of the children of our district. Giving back to my community is important to me, and in these roles I enjoy being a steward for both our town’s needs and its precious resources.
