Luxury Homes and Lifestyle in Cape Elizabeth, ME: A Suburb Never Looked So Good

Even if you have never heard of Cape Elizabeth, chances are you’ve seen pictures of it. Cape, as it’s fondly called by locals, is home to Portland Head Light, the most photographed lighthouse in the world. The stoic tower poised surely on the rocky Atlantic coast is a fitting symbol of this town’s personality: one that’s strong, steady, proud and bright.

Peaceful Living Close to Portland

This affluent seaside town presents residents with the perfect paradox: a non-commercial feel with a short commute to urban amenities. In Cape proper, you’ll find a cafe, small supermarket, gourmet wine and cheese shop and landmark restaurants like the Lobster Shack, where diners enjoy local seafood at red picnic tables overlooking the ocean. Neighboring South Portland also offers year-round restaurants, the incredibly popular Scratch Bakery (where fans line up for hot bagels at sunrise) and the community theater, Portland Players. And downtown Portland is just a quick 10-minute skip over the bridge.

Surrounded by Nature

Throughout Cape Elizabeth, miles of hiking and biking trails coax out everyone from seasoned triathletes to parents with toddlers in tow. Two Lights State Park is open year round for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, nature walks, rock climbing and tide pool exploration. And long summers days stretch into evenings at Crescent Beach State Park, a family favorite with its protected sandy cove, grills, bathhouse, playground and snack bar. For quieter enjoyment, the marsh lands offer a serene opportunity to kayak, canoe, or simply watch the birds.

Nationally Recognized Education

The Cape Elizabeth public school system is reliably ranked in the state’s top five each year, with its high school consistently making U.S. News and World Report’s list of the best in the country. Achievers in the classroom and on the field, the Cape Elizabeth boys’ high school lacrosse team recently won three state titles in a row. Always supportive, this is a community that loves to rally around its youth sports teams, enthusiastically packing the bleachers to cheer on the hometown athletes.

A Road Racing Destination

On the first weekend in August, the Beach to Beacon 10K, founded by Olympic gold medalist (and Cape native) Joan Benoit Samuelson, gives local weekend warriors the chance to compete with elite international runners. The course leads the athletes from Crescent Beach along the coastline while thousands of supporters cheer them on to the finish at Fort Williams State Park. The race sells out quickly every year, and Cape residents get first crack at the exclusive bibs.

Cape Elizabeth, ME Real Estate: Inspiration Found

With its high quality of life, Cape Elizabeth has long been among the most coveted slices of southern Maine real estate: actress Bette Davis lived here in the 1950s, and artist Edward Hopper used Two Lights as his muse. It’s easy to imagine why. All along the Cape Elizabeth coastline, cottage-style oceanfront estates with bright green lawns sprawl in contrast against the ocean. On foggier days, they’re encircled with a protective gray blanket, closing off the rest of the world and encouraging cozy hibernation. Away from the water, you’ll find everything from quiet residential neighborhoods with mid-century style gems to charmingly restored farmhouses on acres of open land.
