An Inviting Historic Town With Sites to Take You Back in Time

Take a boat ride along the upper estuary of the Damariscotta River and witness the estimated 2100 year old middens piled high with shells, bones, charcoal, and artifacts left behind by Edgecombs earliest residents - the Native Americans and Early European settlers that once consumed the abundance of wild oysters that once supported these early people. Join the many historians and archaeologists that have studied these heaps meticulously. The most significant historical site in the town is Fort Edgecomb, which is now a state park and welcome to visitors to take a self tour with detailed information. Built in 1809 on Davis Island along the Sheepscot River across from the town of Wiscasset, the fort is a wooden octagonal structure with a second floor larger than its first. Made to defend the then-important shipbuilding port of Wiscasset from attacks from the British during the War of 1812, the ground floor had holes for the purpose of firing muskets while the purpose of the upper level holes were for firing cannons. The post saw British prisoners of war and remained manned until being reactivated during the Civil War. Both of these sites remain as reminders of the area’s rich history and are great sites to visit as residents or visitors.
