In 1925, resident Josiah Chase, Jr. donated a gorgeous shoreline trail now known as Marginal Way to the town for public enjoyment (and walkability). To further remove traffic and parking hassles from the seaside experience, the trail is complemented by a trolley service that runs the two miles of Ocean Street between Main Beach and Footbridge Beach.

Where Everybody Knows Your Name

It may be cliché elsewhere, but in Ogunquit it is true and authentic. Here, locals greet each other by name as they pass on the street — and if the name is on the tip of the tongue, a warm smile is a welcome Plan B. Folks are known to strike up conversations everywhere: in the post office line, entering the bank, and especially at the Village Food Market, where daily chats over coffee and the paper are de rigueur.

A Cultural Jewel

For over 80 years, the Ogunquit Playhouse has entertained patrons with five high-quality theatrical productions per season. Since being founded by Broadway showman Walter Hartwig and his wife Maude in 1933, the playhouse has attracted stars of screens and stage, including Sally Struthers and Bette Davis. It’s one of the last true summer music theatres, and a beloved one.

Cozy Winters in Town

Residents love to welcome all guests to their special town. Yet when the last summer shutter is locked, locals settle into offseason routines that are just as precious. Fireside cocktails and steak au poivre at the Old Village Inn, Saturday sing-a-longs around the piano at the Front Porch, and Sunday card games at That Place (called “Rick’s” by those in the know) as snow gathers outside are the heart and soul of winter-time Ogunquit.

Ogunquit’s original draw is its gorgeous natural beauty; and the town has ensured it stays as “natural” as possible. It was the first Maine town to ban the use of synthetic pesticides and weed killers on all private and public land. Since then, several other cities have used Ogunquit as a model and have followed suit. The private sector is just as vigilant: a dozen hotels, bed and breakfasts and restaurants proudly display DEP’s Environmental Leader badge, more than any other town in the state.
