Portland, Maine Scores Top Ranking for Minor League Sports

Portland, Maine has soared to the top minor league city in the U.S., as ranked by the Sports Business Journal.  The city has made an impressive leap from its previous No. 71 position in 2022, showcasing a vibrant sports culture that is boosting its appeal.

This prestigious ranking comes after the Sports Business Journal evaluated factors such as attendance trends, merchandise sales, community involvement, and workplace culture. Portland excels in each area, which has secured its place as the No. 1 minor league market. From baseball to basketball, hockey, and soon soccer, fan support for Maine’s largest city continues to grow across multiple sports.

At the heart of this sports-driven enthusiasm are four beloved teams: the Portland Sea Dogs (baseball), the Maine Mariners (hockey), the Maine Celtics (basketball), and the highly anticipated Portland Hearts of Pine (soccer). Three of these teams are affiliated with Boston’s major league franchises. The the Double-A Sea Dogs have long been affiliated with the Boston Red Sox, while the Mariners became the ECHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins in 2021 and the Maine Celtics were acquired by the Boston Celtics in 2019 as their G-League team.

The Sea Dogs wrapped up their 30th season in Portland this fall, with team president and general manager Geoff Iacuessa noting that “overall revenue has hit record levels in each of the past three seasons.” Meanwhile, the Maine Mariners kicked off their sixth ECHL season with a two-game series against the Wheeling Nailers, reporting a “16 percent year-over-year attendance increase from 2022-23 to last season,” further underscoring the strong local support.

Adding to Portland’s excitement, the Maine Celtics are coming off their first appearance in the G League finals last season, with their 2024-25 campaign beginning on November 8 in Long Island. Plus, the city will soon welcome its fourth minor league team, the Hearts of Pine, who will begin playing in USL League One next spring, already generating buzz with over 4,500 pre-sold season tickets.

To keep up with all the latest developments and maybe catch a few games yourself, keep an eye on Portland’s thriving sports scene. Whether you’re a local fan or planning a visit, there’s never been a better time to enjoy the sports culture that the country’s  top minor league city has to offer.
