Maine Ranked 3rd Most Eco-Friendly State In The U.S

Maine Ranked 3rd Most Eco-Friendly State In The U.S

It’s no secret that Maine is a leader in sustainability initiatives. Eco-friendly efforts by Mainers are succeeding, according to numbers from a new study.

Maine ranks number 3 among the country’s “greenest” states, says an analysis from online advocacy publication ConsumerAffairs. The state’s commitment to conservation ensures these natural landscapes are preserved for generations to come.

Among the reasons cited for Maine’s high placement:

  • 47.7% of Maine’s waste is recycled, the largest percentage of any state
  • Only about 15% of Maine’s waste ends up in landfills (the U.S. average is nearly 70%)
  • Annual carbon dioxide emissions in Maine are 1.58 tons per capita, among the 10 lowest for any state
  • Renewable sources generate 63% of Maine’s power — an annual total of over 8 million megawatt-hours, more than in some larger states such as Pennsylvania.

In the overall ranking of ‘greenest’ states, Vermont is ranked number 1, followed by Washington at number 2. This focus on sustainability extends beyond just preserving the land; it creates a unique environment that fosters a deep appreciation for nature.

Many communities actively promote renewable energy sources, and homeowners are increasingly opting for solar panels and energy-efficient appliances. Consumer Affairs also brought attention to Maine’s solar initiatives.

The average residential solar panel system in Maine costs $11,886 after the full federal solar investment tax credit. This is cheaper than in many other states — the national average is $16,715.

Maine has no statewide residential rebates or loan programs for solar panels, but it gives residents a property tax exemption for the value added by solar panels that can save homeowners money. The Pine Tree State also has a net metering program to help offset your monthly bills.

In Maine, you can reduce costs on your solar energy system by using solar tax incentives and net metering, with the typical federal solar investment tax credit valued at $5,094. Additionally, homeowners in Maine save an average of $25,880 over 25 years by installing solar panels.
